A new roll of posters and several cases of books arrived the following week.
Julia brought Melanie back, and the girl helped Fiona change all the posters and stock the shelves.
âI still canât believe heâs dead,â the girl said as she held Poppy in her arms and stared at Lourdesâs smiling face on the new poster. It was the same poster but with the addition of a black banner that read 'In Memory of Our Friend' across it and the new date of the event. âHe was such a nice old man and such a good writer.â
âDid you read 'The Twelfth Night Gift?'â Fiona asked.
âIt was so good,â the girl sighed. âIt would have made a much better movie than 'The Reckoning.'â She began taping the poster to the window in the door. âHave you read 'Nightshade' yet?â
âIâm reading it now.â
âIsnât Pierre hot?â the teenager asked. âI donât even care that heâs gay.â
Fiona furrowed her brow and smiled. âA gay werewolf?â
"He wasnât always a werewolf, Aunt Fiona. A witch cast a spell on him when she found out he was in love with his best friendâanother guy.â She tore off some tape and stuck it on the corners of the poster. âHe was supposed to marry her,â Melanie continued. âOne of those arranged family things from back in the day, you know?â
âI will if you keep giving away the story before I can read it,â Fiona scolded.
âOh, right. Sorry, Aunt Fi.â Melanieâs cheeks turned pink with embarrassment.
âI was thinking about ordering a pizza for supper. What do you think?â
The willowy teen dropped the squirming dog to the floor and smiled. âHawaiian with extra cheese and extra pineapple,â she pled.
âYouâve got it.â Fiona took her phone from her pocket and scrolled through her contacts to find the one saved for pizza.
The day had been slow with only a few people stopping in to check and see how things had changed with the big book signing. Fiona had never imagined how many people in town were invested in the event. Store owners had planned special sales for the anticipated crowd of out-of-towners, restaurants were planning special menus based on meals in Lourdesâs books for the day, and the theatre had booked "The Reckoning" for the weekend.
It surprised Fiona that so many other businesses in St. Elizabeth were depending as much on her event as she was. She explained the changes and that they were still anticipating a large turnout for the event. Mr. Bascombe had sent along a handwritten note telling Fiona where heâd placed information about the memorial tribute to Lourdes. The list was extensive and included national news venues, literary journals, and area newspapers. He told her to expect a crowd and lots of flowers.
âOnly a few more days, Aunt Fiona,â Melanie said as they readied for bed that night.
âI know,â Fiona sighed, âand I canât wait for things to get back to normal.â
âGet back to boring, you mean,â Melanie said with a giggle.
They were sitting together on the balcony enjoying the quiet July evening when the sound of glass shattering below brought them to their feet.
